We were scheduled to be induced on Monday July 22, 2013 at 7
am. Brad and I stayed the night in Idaho Falls and got up early to get ready
for the big day. We went to McDonalds prior to going into the hospital for a
little breakfast.
When we got to the hospital the nurse hooked me up to an IV
and prepared to give me pitocine (pit), a drug to help bring on the labor, and
we filled out some paperwork. At 9 am I was given the first dose of the pit.
Within a few hours I started to feel the contractions, but they were minor.
They kept checking me, and I was just not progressing the way that they would
like.
Finally at 3 pm they decided to review my options because my
body had regressed by half a centimeter. The options they had given me was to
go home and wait for him to come naturally, or schedule a c-section. Neither of
these options were ideal because if we went home there was a good chance that
Brad would miss the birth because of work. And I did not want to have surgery
to have my baby. I told them this and they suggested a pill that would help to
soften my cervix and will sometimes jump start labor. I opted for this one. It
was a 3 dosage pill, however after the first dose, I was already having
contractions stronger than before. So they didn’t give me the other two doses
in.
By 1030 pm my water broke. It felt like two pops, during a
contraction. I felt like I peed myself, I called the nurse and because I was
taking so long to go into labor they took the pads from under me and had to
clean up the bed. At this point we were very excited because it showed progress
and at this point no matter what we were going to have baby Blake here soon.
1 am, my contractions were very strong. I was surprised at
how much it hurt and started to get a emotional. We called the nurse in and she
said I was only dilated to a 3 which wasn’t far enough to give the epidural.
Prior to birth I though I was strong and had a high tolerance for pain, boy was
I wrong. They gave me a drug to help take the edge off until I progressed further
or the anesthesiologist came in. By 2 am the anesthesiologist arrived and
administered the epidural. Within minutes the pain was starting to dull.
At this point I was able to get a little sleep, as I had
been awake since 530 in the morning. Brad, Liz and I slept to about 6. We
called our nurse Laura, in and she didn’t want to wake me because I would need
my strength for what was to come. So I hadn’t progressed any since the epidural
was administered. She started the pit again. At 7 they checked me and I was at
a 4 and expected it to take a while longer. Liz had to work, so she took off
and Anna came in to cover for her until she could come back at 1. At 8am I was
checked again and I was at an 8!! It wouldn’t be long now. But I was starting
to get a headache and my blood pressure was starting to rise. They continued to
check me and do what they could to lower my blood pressure, however at 10am I
was ready to go and measuring at a 10. I was so numb that I couldn’t feel
anything or in pain. She called Dr. Leavitt to see what he recommended and he
wanted to bring my blood pressure down a bit more before I pushed especially if
I wasn’t in pain. By noon it hadn’t gone down and they opted to deliver the
baby.
Noon Liz got back. Anna had called her and she was running
to make it in time for the delivery. At 12:15 I started to push. After just a
few pushes and about a half an hour at 12:44pm on July 23, 2012 our beautiful
baby Blake came into the world weighing 7lb 10oz and 20 ½ inches long. He was
perfect! The first time I got to hold him was amazing and Brad started to tear
up. We couldn’t believe he was here, and so grateful he was healthy.
We stayed in the hospital for 2 more days for observation.
Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center was awesome. The nurses and Doctors were
very knowledgeable and helpful, teaching us what we needed to know to care for
our sweet baby. We left feeling prepared to care for Blake and ready for the
change having a baby in our home would bring.
